Sexual abuse

The definition of sexual abuse is very broad and does not necessarily mean that sexual penetration has occurred.  Showing a child pornographic material, inappropriate touching, language and advances all constitute sexual abuse.  A parent who goes into the bathroom against a child's will while s/he is bathing may constitute sexual abuse.  If you believe you have suffered from sexual abuse it is important to seek some kind of counselling in order to deal with the scars.  This needs to be done with a good therapist. Seek out a psychologist in your area.

In terms of the link to eating disorders, sexually abuse is experienced as an abuse of the body.  Quite often this is dealt with by switching off emotionally. These emotions are split off and parked off, so to speak, in the psyche.  They are safely kept out of daily conscious living, but they do not go away and begin to have an insidious impact on the life of the individual. Making the body unattractive is one way of creating a protective barrier.
